PREFACE(前言)/B>
Out of the hundreds of works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach only a very few are suitable to be performed on the guitar. Yet the performance of Bach has become a dominating feature of any serious study of the instrument and the challenge he presents is both fascinating and severe. With the playing of Bach the guitarist leaves behind the charming but parochial backwaters of so much of the usual repertoire and enters the mainstream of European musical culture.
Each of the great guitarists of this century has faced up to the problems of interpreting Bach, whether by performing or editing, in individual ways, each one taking us further along the path of understanding. The same process has occurred with instrumentalists in other fields as well, from Pablo Casals and Wanda Landowska onwards. Each generation tends to be a little supercilious about the contribution of previous artists. Fashions and attitudes towards how Bach should be performed change rapidly over the years for various reasons. In the course of such sudden developments particular styles of performance or once esteemed recordings soon become objects of historical curiosity as each age is accustomed to assume that it is closer to the essence of Bach's music then any previous era.
Historically, as with the works of Shakespeare, each generation emphasises in Bach that which it feels is relevant to itself. The 19th century emphasised Bach's religious faith and his academic logic, Casals saw his music as passionate and warm, Landowska wished to return Bach to his contemporary sonorities whilst Segovia made the playing of Bach on the guitar internationally acceptable. Our own immediate decades have concentrated strongly on purity of texts and further understanding of Baroque style and performance, especially with regard to eighteenth century instrumentation and the art of embellishment.
